Eleventh Annual Delius Prize held at the Royal Academy of Music

A rare performance of Late Swallows, arranged by Eric Fenby and performed by Thomas Ang, won The Delius Prize 2015 held on 13th May at the Royal Academy of Music in London.  To complete his 20-minute recital, Thomas went on to play his own arrangements of three ‘English Love Lyrics’.
This was the eleventh performance competition organised by The Delius Society since 2004.  It attracted 10 entries in the preliminary round, held in private during the afternoon, from which four were selected for the evening’s final public competition.  All entries satisfied the rules of the competition and were heard in ideal conditions in the Royal Academy’s David Josefowitz Recital Hall.

The Adjudicator for the entire competition was Jeremy Dibble, Professor of Music at the University of Durham, assisted by Roger Buckley who represented The Delius Society.  Prof. Dibble spoke to all the entrants about the need, when performing Delius, to think in terms of the melodic lines and the overall structure of each piece.  He also reminded the duos that they would be judged as a single entry, rather than as a soloist plus an accompanist.

Commenting on the 2015 Prize, Roger Buckley said: “The standard of this year’s entries was high, making the task of adjudication difficult.  The main objective of the Prize – to encourage students to investigate and play works by Delius – continues to be achieved.  Over the last 11 years, this competition has inspired around 150 young musicians to look out and perform the works of Delius and many have gone on to include his music in their repertoire.  The Society congratulates all of this year’s entrants, the finalists and in particular the prize winners for their outstanding performances.”
