Anthony Payne (1936-2021)

We were saddened to learn of the death of Anthony Payne, celebrated composer and Vice President of the Delius Society, on 30 April 2021, just a month after his wife, Jane Manning, passed away. Best known for his completion of Elgar’s Third Symphony, his early works were inspired by Elgar, Delius and Vaughan Williams. He first spoke to The Delius Society in 1967, when he gave a talk on Delius’s Requiem, and since then has been a regular speaker at Society events. In 2001 he gave a talk entitled ‘My compositional involvement with Delius’ and, most recently, in 2015, he spoke about ‘How Delius has impinged on my music’. A champion of the music of Delius over many years, he became a Vice President of the Delius Society in 2011, having accepted the nomination at a time when he was revising his tone poem Spring’s Shining Wake, a homage to Delius.
