Delius Society Autumn 2021 digital event is: ‘Delius, Barbirolli and the Critics’

with Professor Raymond Holden AM
Emeritus Professor of Music, Royal Academy of Music, London

Filmed at The Royal Academy of Music, London

A transcendental and charismatic artist, Sir John Barbirolli did much to shape the performance environment of his age. Having famously saved Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra from near extinction during the darkest days of the Second World War, he went on to become one of Britain’s greatest cultural ambassadors, conducting 684 performances of music by Delius, on five continents.

Based on his lectures, broadcasts and articles over the last thirty years, Raymond Holden shares his appreciation of this ‘musician’s musician’ together with extracts from ‘JB’s’ recordings.
