Grieg and Delius Piano Concertos (SOMMCD 269)

Grieg: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.16
Delius: Piano Concerto in C minor
Grieg: Piano Concerto No.2 in B minor (sketches)
Delius: Three Preludes
Delius: On Hearing the first Cuckoo in Spring
Jan Latham-Koenig, Mark Bebbington
An evergreen masterpiece, an under-appreciated jewel and a great ‘what might have been’ – pianist Mark Bebbington and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jan Latham Koenig explore the personal and musical connections between Edvard Grieg and Frederick Delius for Somm Recordings. Heard together on disc for the first time, the Piano Concertos by Grieg and Delius reveal the full extent of the composers’ friendship and mutual admiration. Their music seems to share and exalt in ideals of beauty and tone, scale and sentiment to produce a consummate and complementary coupling.
Julian Lloyd-Webber – A Span of Time (4-CD Box Set – re-issue of individual discs) Naxos 8.504053

In this retrospective of his art Julian Lloyd-Webber can be heard as soloist, arranger and conductor. He evokes the lyricism of the songs of Frederick Delius and John Ireland with rich expressivity, adapts a selection of music from Monteverdi to Arvo Pärt for the combination of two cellos, and crafts new and exciting Vivaldi arrangements. His conducting prowess is shown by supremely sensitive performances of English string music. These are the last recordings that Lloyd Webber made before announcing his retirement from playing.

Percy Grainger: The Complete Music for Four Hands, Two Pianos. Penelope Thwaites, John Lavender, Timothy Young (pianos)

Heritage HTGCD 403 – 5060332661725 4 CDs
Includes:
A Dance Rhapsody – Delius arr. Grainger * Song of the High Hills – Delius arr. Grainger
The music of Percy Grainger (1882-1961) for piano/s four hands ranges from a few intimate duets to a significant body of quasi-orchestral concert works. The great majority were written for two instruments and they exploit this rich resource to the full. Given that almost all were originally works for chamber, orchestral, wind-band or choral forces, pianists have the widest possible range of sound references.
Leading Grainger scholar and performer, Penelope Thwaites, has newly recorded a fourth CD with fellow Australian pianist, Timothy Young, to add to the three existing CDs of Grainger’s music she recorded with John Lavender for the Pearl label in the 1990s. All four CDs contain many world premieres, including the discovery of a youthful piano concerto fragment, and provide a fascinating insight into Grainger’s pianistic output.
Delius and Elgar String Quartets (Naxos 8.573586)

The Villiers Quartet
Frederick Delius: String Quartet in E minor (original and revised versions) Edward Elgar: String Quartet in E minor, Op. 83
The legacy of the First World War left its mark on the music of near contemporaries Edward Elgar and Frederick Delius. The powerful outer movements of Elgar’s String Quartet in E minor frame a wistful and sombre Andante piacevole. Delius was dissatisfied with the first, three-movement version of his Quartet and revised the score. On this recording the final 1917 version is followed by the original versions of the opening movement and of the Late Swallows slow movement, offering a rare glimpse into Delius’s compositional workshop.
Sir Charles Groves – British Music

Delius is well-represented in this box set of 24 CD’s http://www.warnerclassics.com/release/4834206,0825646147243/sir-charles-groves-sir-charles-groves-british-music
The eminent English conductor Sir Charles Groves is today remembered not so much for his breadth of repertoire as for his immense contribution to British music, which he continuously promoted, performed and recorded throughout his professional career. Featuring a wide variety of genres – from symphonies and operas to popular marches and film music excerpts – this special 24-CD compilation pays tribute to Groves’s remarkable achievement, bringing together works by many of the composers who were at the heart of the conductor’s commitment in a selection of authoritative recordings that survey over 100 years of glorious British composition.

Michael Tanner, International Record Review
“Callaghan and Takenouchi really do give an utterly convincing account” (of ‘Song of the High Hills’).
This is a magnificent recital of works that still struggle to be recognised as the masterpieces I believe them to be.

Sea Drift and Appalachia
The Florida Orchestra
Baritone Leon Williams and The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay
Naxos 8572764

Both works were recorded ‘live and in concert’ during this past season’s Tampa Bay Times Masterworks program Celebrate Delius at the two performances at the Progress Energy Centre for the Arts Mahaffey Theatre on January 6th and 7th 2012.
Delius lived briefly in Florida, along the St. John’s River some 35 miles south of Jacksonville in an area called Solano Grove. It was there that he first heard American plantation songs, which both inspired him as a composer and left such a unique musical signature on many of his works.
Orchestra President and CEO Michael Pastreich said, “In past seasons, our orchestra has performed highlights from Delius’ Irmelin and The Florida Suite, and we have performed such miniatures of his as On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring and The Walk to the Paradise Garden on various occasions. However, this was the first time The Florida Orchestra had performed and then recorded these more significant works of Sea Drift and Appalachia. We hope these initiatives on our part help to raise the awareness and enjoyment of Delius’ music, in particularly his major works, which are so rich in musical and emotional nuances.”

Friendships between major composers are often important and mutually beneficial, and they shed light on our perception and enjoyment of their music. Schumann and Brahms, Stravinsky and Debussy, Wagner and Liszt, Holst and Vaughan Williams – in each case one life was influenced, aided, inspired and affected by the other in real and tangible ways. So it was, however unlikely it might seem, with Grieg and Delius
